The Associated Press has called the race for Kentucky Attorney General for political newcomer Daniel Cameron, a Republican. Cameron defeats former Attorney General Greg Stumbo, a Democrat, to claim the position that will be left behind by Democrat Andy Beshear.
Prior to becoming the state’s attorney general, Cameron served as general counsel to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and worked as a corporate lawyer for Kentucky law firm Frost Brown Todd. Cameron also worked as a spokesman for the Kentucky Smart on Crime Coalition, a group that advocates for criminal justice reform measures in the state.
With this victory, Cameron has become the first African-American candidate to hold statewide office in Kentucky running on his own ticket. Former Lt. Gov. Jenean Hampton is the first African American to hold statewide office in Kentucky, but she was elected on a slate with Gov. Matt Bevin.
