U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced State Director Terry Carmack, a Marshall County native, as his new chief of staff following Phil Maxson’s departure after ten years of service.

McConnell said in a Tuesday press release he thanks Maxson for a decade of service, stating Maxson has helped create “one of the best teams on Capitol Hill”. Maxson served as McConnell’s chief of staff since 2017. He previously served as legislative director, director of projects, and oversaw defense and military legislative affairs.

“His wise counsel and masterful knowledge of legislative procedure, the committee process, and Kentucky projects have produced a lengthy record of accomplishments of which he should be proud,” Senator McConnell said in a statement. “Phil has my sincere thanks for his decade of service in my office. I wish him, Sarah Beth, and their family the very best for their future.”

Terry Carmack is a Marshall County native. He attended Murray State University and graduated from George Mason University. Carmack has been McConnell’s state director since June 2010, and has worked previous positions such as chief of staff for former Kentucky representatives Anne Northup and Ed Whitfield. Carmack was also political director at the National Republican Congressional Committee. McConnell stated that Carmack’s new position would help more than just Kentucky.

“He’s the perfect mixture of talent and hard work. For the last decade as my State Director, Terry has traveled to every corner of Kentucky to listen to families’ stories and concerns,” he said. “Now, he’s the best choice to help me advance our Commonwealth’s priorities in the Senate. Terry is ready to lead my DC and state staffs, in coordination with my leadership office, to deliver for Kentucky and Middle America.”

McConnell’s office did not respond to a request for comment from Carmack.
