Frankfort, KY – Legislation aimed at eliminating the 160-year old dueling clause in Kentucky's Constitution is seeing action in the state House. The clause requires officeholders to swear they've never fought a duel with deadly weapons. But Nicholasville Sen. Tom Buford sees no reason to eliminate the language.
"I understand that there's probably some belief that it makes us look kind of silly, but on the other hand, I think it is just a piece of history. And it's very difficult in Kentucky to turn our backs on those pieces of history."
A constitutional amendment sponsored by Louisville Rep. Darryl Owens would let the people decide the issue. Owens' bill unanimously passed a House committee and now awaits a House floor vote.
