Frankfort, KY – The Kentucky House has urged Congress to halt federal environmental officials from regulating greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act. Approved on a 76-to-16 vote Tuesday, the resolution urges Congress to adopt a "balanced approach" to dealing with climate and energy supply issues without hurting the economy and postpone efforts to regulate pollutants under the Clean Air Act. The issue is sensitive in Kentucky since the burning of coal and other fossil fuels is seen as a contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.
Democratic Representative Jim Gooch says EPA enforcement would hurt Kentucky's economy and would raise the state's utility rates. Another Democrat, Representative Jim Wayne, opposed the resolution. He says the proper course is to encourage deeper cuts in emissions.
