KY Bible Literacy Courses

By KPR

Frankfort, KY – The Kentucky senate has overwhelmingly approved what's referred to as a bible literacy' bill. The measure, adopted 37 to one Thursday, requires the state board of education to develop guidelines for establishing elective courses for high school students. It would be up to each school council to decide whether to offer the classes. Bill sponsor David Boswell says individual teachers would be called upon to teach a quote non- biased edition of the bible.'

"The concept of this legislation was signed off in support by the protestant movement as well as the catholic movement and the jewish congress."

Boswell says the courses would focus on teaching the bible in the context of art, literature, and history. Lexington Senator Kathy Stein cast a "no" vote saying the bill is fraught with peril.' She says there could be pressure on teachers in some communities to teach the bible as true history.
