No Vote on Clarksville City Charter

By Chris Taylor

Clarksville, TN – Clarksville, Tennessee's City Council voted yesterday to withdraw its proposed city charter to avoid a citywide referendum. The move comes after state legislative subcommittee this week voted to approve the document, with the stipulation it be on the November ballot. The Clarksville Leaf Chronicle reports Attorney Roger Maness, who served on the Charter and Codes Revision Committee, advised the council it would be "profoundly unwise" to allow the 52-page charter to go to a vote, because there is no way to accurately summarize it on a ballot. The city will now send a letter to the Tennessee House asking it withdraw the charter from consideration.
