Frankfort, KY – New nursing degree programs could be offered at a number of Kentucky's regional universities over the next few years. A legislative measure approved in both houses allows the comprehensive universities to initiate Doctor of Nursing Practice programs. State Council on Postsecondary Education president Bob King says the demand for nurses is significant.
The University of Kentucky is the only school currently offering the DNP degree. King says Eastern, Western, and Northern Kentucky have expressed interest in the advanced nursing degree program. Bill sponsor Senator Ken Winters says Murray State is also interested.
"Hospitals and nursing homes increasingly are gonna need more highly trained nurses in the future just as the nature of medical practice changes and so this is a way to anticipate that and hopefully meet that demand."
