Frankfort, KY – Legislators clearing the way for charter schools in Kentucky say the effort is still alive. The state senate Thursday passed a multi-faceted bill which included the language to allow the creation of charter schools. State education commissioner Terry Holliday says allowing the charter school law would enhance the state's chances at winning a $175 million grant from the Federal "Race to the Top" program.
"We still believe that Kentucky's site based councils are even more appropriate than charters but obviously the race to the top guidelines didn't see it that way."
The bill goes to the House where Education Committee Chair Carl Rollins has little enthusiasm for the proposal.
"I'm not gonna make a bad decision for Kentucky because the federal government wants us to I think I'm still not crazy about the whole concept of charter schools."
It could undergo further study over the next couple of weeks and face a house vote when the General Assembly reconvenes in mid April.
