Nashville, TN – A proposal that would limit the Tennessee governor's authority to suspend or limit the sale of firearms during a state of emergency passed the state Senate 29 to one Monday. The companion bill is awaiting a vote in the House Judiciary Criminal Practice and Procedure Subcommittee.
Last year, Governor Phil Bredesen signed legislation that would prohibit seizing a person's gun during periods of martial rule if the weapon is possessed legally. Sponsors of the measure say the law is necessary after law enforcement in New Orleans went door to door seizing weapons in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
