Paducah, KY – The US Department of Energy is targeting groundwater pollution beneath the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant. It's begun cleansing around 50,000 gallons of contaminated groundwater daily. Over the next year and a half, workers will operate equipment to heat groundwater to a boil as deep down as 100 feet; then vacuuming up the vapors at the surface. The Paducah Sun reports the operation targets tens of thousands of gallons of the degreaser chemical trichloroethylene, which has spilled or leaked at the site for more than 40 years.
