Nashville, TN – A proposal that would limit the Tennessee governor's authority to suspend or limit the sale of firearms during a state of emergency is advancing in the state House. The measure passed the House Judiciary Committee on a voice vote Tuesday evening. The companion bill was approved 29-1 in the Senate earlier this month.
Last year, Governor Phil Bredesen signed legislation into law that would prohibit seizing a person's gun during periods of martial rule if the weapon is possessed legally. Sponsors of the measure say the law is necessary after law enforcement in New Orleans went door to door seizing weapons in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
