Frankfort, KY – The 2010 Kentucky General Assembly enters its final two days with no budget compromise for lawmakers to consider.
House and Senate leaders left the Capitol Tuesday evening with no agreement to recommend to the full legislature. They've been at odds over a House Democratic proposal to borrow funds for school and other construction projects. Republicans who control the Senate say the state should not take on additional debt in the current economy.
Negotiators would need to reach agreement in short order Wednesday to have a budget proposal ready in time for approval by the end of Thursday, April 15. If a budget is not approved by that time, Governor Steve Beshear would have to call a special session for lawmakers to approve a spending plan.
