Bowling Green, KY – Kentucky's leading Republican candidates for U-S Senate squared off in Bowling Green last night before a crowd of about 200. Much of the debate centered on the economy and lowering the national debt. Bowling Green eye surgeon Rand Paul said one solution would be eliminating federal departments that he says are unconstitutional.
"I think we could eliminate the department of education. Ronald Reagan ran on that platform, it was on the Republican platform for many years. We as Republicans have always believed in local control of schools, not federal."
Secretary of state Trey Grayson voiced support for a balanced budget amendment and spending freeze at the federal level.
"If we do some things like that, that will give confidence to the markets, that will give some certainty to small business owners that they can go out and make investments. The government can't create jobs over the long run. It's small businesses."
Both G-O-P candidates said the federal health care overhaul recently signed into law should be repealed.
