Egos Blamed for Breakdown in Kentucky Budget Talks

By AP

Frankfort, KY – An angry Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear says Republican Senate President David Williams, Democratic House Speaker Greg Stumbo and others on the budget negotiating teams left state government in the lurch over egos when they adjourned Thursday without passing a spending plan.

Three times in the past 10 years, Kentucky lawmakers have adjourned legislative sessions without passing a budget. Chairman of the government watchdog group Common Cause of Kentucky, Richard Beliles says each time, egos were the primary impediment. Beliles said Friday he agrees with Beshear: The negotiators just couldn't get past their pride to reach a budget compromise.
