Nashville, TN – Tennessee House Republicans have joined their Senate counterparts in voicing opposition to Democratic Governor Phil Bredesen's proposal to lift a cap on sales taxes charged on big ticket items to close an $85 million budget hole.
House Republican Caucus Chairman Glen Casada says small businesses would be put into the "crosshairs of this massive tax increase." The state currently caps sales taxes on most big ticket items at seven percent.
The governor's proposal would extend the single article tax to items costing more than $3,200. Taxes on vehicles, boats and manufactured homes would remain capped.
