Nashville, TN – The full Tennessee Senate is set to vote on a bill regarding languages the state's driver's license tests are given in, though the sponsor says the measure does nothing to change current practices. The Senate Finance Committee voted eight-to-three to advance the bill sponsored by Republican Senator Bill Ketron.
Ketron says the bill would preserve existing exceptions allowing the written exams to be taken in other languages by people legally in the United States. But he said his bill "sends a message" on Tennessee's preference for giving the tests in English. Democratic Senate Minority Leader Jim Kyle says the measure sends the wrong message to potential foreign investors in Tennessee. The companion bill is awaiting a vote in the House Budget Subcommittee.
