Frankfort, KY – Republicans gained voters, and Democrats lost some in the latest voter registration numbers released by the Kentucky Secretary of State's office. But Democrats still outnumber Republicans 57-percent to 37-percent. Six-percent of Kentucky voters are independents, or "Others." Les Fugate of the Secretary of State's office says voter registration numbers in general are down from the 2008 Presidential election.
"Presidential elections are the main driver of voter registration, typically. But we will see much more voter registrations as we get closer to the general election. Primary elections typically do not drive individuals to go out and register to vote. So, we didn't see a large spike as we got close to Election Day. But we're counting on, as we get closer to November, that many more individuals will register to vote."
Two-point-eight million registered voters are eligible to go to the polls for Kentucky's May 18th primary. Fifty-seven percent of the voters are women and 43-percent are men.
