Brookport, IL – A mass-effort in Brookport, Illinois has saved about six low-lying homes from flooding after water from the Ohio River surged through a floodgate and culvert under U-S 45. The Paducah Sun reports Red Cross relief workers and other local volunteers stacked around 9,000 sandbags over the weekend and laid out plastic sheeting to defend the East 8th and 9th street neighborhood from the swelling runoff.
Meanwhile in Kentucky along Lake Barkley and the Cumberland River, many residents are being warned to remain vigilant as water levels remain some 10 feet higher above the summer pool. Officials continue to tweak the amount of water discharging into the Ohio from Barkley Dam. Recreational boaters are cautioned to watch out for submerged debris which could damage hulls.
