Nashville, TN – A proposal that would require prospective voters in Tennessee to check a box to affirm they are citizens before registering is scheduled before the full Senate Monday evening.
The companion bill to the one sponsored by Republican Sen. Dewayne Bunch of Cleveland passed the House 92-1 last week. The House version originally would have required people to present evidence of their U.S. citizenship along with a photo ID, their occupation and their parents' names.
But the bill was changed to require a person to only check a box to say they are legally in the United States. The Senate bill requires the same, but an amendment has been proposed that would require proof of identification, such as a driver's license or birth certificate.
