Mayoral Candidates Outline Agenda

By Angela Hatton

Hopkinsville, KY – The two democratic candidates for Hopkinsville mayor are outlining their platforms in more detail. The Kentucky New Era reports incumbent Mayor Dan Kemp wants to reduce the city's payroll tax by 1.85 percent. The city raised the payroll tax by a half a percent in 2007, generating $2.2 million in revenue. Kemp's challenger, Richard Covington, wants to focus more on strengthening the city's police department. Covington says the numbers the police department released last month that show crime has gone down are incorrect. He says there needs to be a greater focus on reducing gang violence. No Republicans are running for the mayor's position, which means next week's primary will decide the race.
