Paducah, KY – The U-S Department of Energy is looking to sell radiologically-contaminated scrap nickel from Paducah's Gaseous Diffusion Plant and a similar plant in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The DOE announced today it will sell the contaminated metal to any agency with clearance, like a nuclear enrichment plant. DOE Public Affairs Specialist Loretta Averna says the purchasing agency is required to declassify and decontaminate the nickel before getting the title to the product. Contaminated nickel can be used by certain military functions.
