Frankfort, KY – A re-canvass of votes cast in Kentucky's Democratic primary for U-S Senate Tuesday will be held next week. Lieutenant Governor Dan Mongiardo, who lost to Attorney General Jack Conway by just over 35-hundred votes, is seeking the re-canvass. Les Fugate of the Secretary of State's office says the accuracy of voting machines is checked in a re-canvass, which is not the same as a recount.
"A recount is something that's determined by a judge. And in Kentucky the judge can set the parameters of the recount as he or she may want to do. So, it's really up to the judge. The big difference is that the candidate has to pay for those expenses. And we've never had a massive recount in Kentucky, so we don't know what those expenses would be."
Lieutenant Governor Mongiardo says he owes it to his supporters to seek the re-canvass. Out of more than 520-thousand votes cast in the Democratic primary, Mongiardo lost by just over 35-hundred votes.
