Golden Pond, KY – The National Forest Service is proposing a change in the nature of part of the forest that covers Land Between the Lakes. The agency is seeking comment on a plan that includes felling non-native trees, using controlled burns and planting other trees in a 3,000-acre section of the Demumbers Creek drainage area.
LBL forester Jaimie Hernandez says there isn't a wide range of tree species, ages and heights in the tract bordering Lake Barkley in the northern part of the national recreation area.
The Forest Service wants to cut down loblolly pines that were planted there and later heavily damaged by the ice storm and replace them with native shortleaf pines. The fires would stimulate growth of oaks and hickories, which have more value to wildlife.
