Frankfort, KY – A coalition of social service agencies, teachers and citizens groups will rally on the steps of the Kentucky State Capitol today. Mental health advocate Sheila Schuster says the event, on the first day of a special session on the budget, is not a protest rally.
"It's a coalition of people called Kentucky Forward, who would really like to urge our legislators - number one - to pass a budget during the special session that is adequate and compassionate."
Lawmakers are in Frankfort to act on a budget compromise offered by Governor Beshear, aimed at avoiding a fiscal calamity on July 1st, when the state's next budget cycle begins. The legislature failed to approve a new two-year spending plan during the 60-day regular session that ended April 15th.
