Fairdealing, KY – A fast-moving storm system damaged a Marshall County marina on Kentucky Lake yesterday. Three of four piers at Southern Komfort Resort sustained heavy damage, sinking a house boat, leaving a gas pump partially underwater and crippling a newly built pavilion shelter. High winds also peeled the roof off of its restaurant. Director of Operations Myra Saffett says the storm system pushed waves toward the marina as high as six feet.
"Waves came over the ends of boats. I used to live on the East coast, right on the ocean. I thought I was back there. I've never seen the lake with these rollers coming in and I thought at one point one of these sailboats was going to be launched over the dock."
The National Weather Service doesn't know exactly what type of storm system this was, but had some reports of 40 plus mile per hour winds. The storm couldn't have come at a worst time for the business, as this Memorial Day weekend is expected to draw many from the area for recreational activities on and around the lakes. Saffett says the resort's campground is still open, but many of its usual services will be limited.
