Murray, KY – Kentucky legislators came to a budget compromise late Friday night, and wrapped up the session Saturday with a comprehensive road plan. First District Senator Ken Winters says Kentucky came out better financially than many other states. However, the Republican Senator wishes they could have done more. Winters says public education's service oriented activities will take a hit.
"And the universities will take a, uh, small cut in the first year and the second year of the biennium, and we wound up with, with no state bond building projects for the universities."
Universities will have their budgets cut 1.4 percent in the first year and 1 percent in the second year. Winters says he's pleased that fourteen building projects for the state's most dilapidated schools will move forward. The education committee plans to study the formula for categorizing school condition. Winters says those results likely won't be ready until the next budget cycle.
