Capitol Birthday in Frankfort

By Tony McVeigh

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky's historic State Capitol turned 100 years old Wednesday, and a centennial celebration will be held on the Capitol grounds this weekend. The event is open to everyone. This year's Governor's Derby Breakfast got rained out, but many of the planned activities are being incorporated into the Capitol's centennial celebration. David Buchta of Historic Properties says the weekend kicks off tonight with a gala in the Capitol rotunda, at which four murals depicting the state's rich history will be officially unveiled.

"This is a rare opportunity to be inside the Capitol and enjoy its architectural beauty, while enjoying a fine meal."

The festivities continue Saturday with plenty of family-oriented activities, including tethered hot air balloon rides, a farmer's market, arts and crafts exhibits, music and Capitol tours. A centennial celebration program hosted by Gov. and Mrs. Beshear will be held on the Capitol steps Saturday afternoon.
