Frankfort, KY – Once known as "the nation's finest," Kentucky's 51 state parks have been in decline in recent years. Insufficient funding is the leading cause. But a 200-page consultant's report aims to reverse the trend, while saving money. Among the recommendations...privatization of some food services and golf courses, reducing winter hours of operation and trimming the hours of full-time employees. Tourism, Arts and Heritage Secretary Marcheta Sparrow says the changes will save six million dollars a year, without closing any parks. "It's not just about managing inns and hotels, or swimming pools. It's about providing an asset for our children for the future."
Another recommendation being adopted will allow alcohol sales at four resort parks in wet counties. Secretary Sparrow does not believe the action requires legislative approval.
