Brookport, Ill. – A Brookport, Illinois dog pound stands empty pending a July 9 deadline for necessary improvements. After a citizen reported poor conditions to local authorities, Brookport's mayor Judy Askew ordered the facility shut down. At the time, the three canines that occupied the facility were transferred to different homes through a rescue effort. The Paducah Sun reports the dogs' water had become green and slimy, and the kennels were littered with waste. After evaluating the pound, an Illinois Department of Agriculture Bureau of Animal Health and Welfare inspector ordered numerous repairs. The agency could impose fines if updates aren't made before the deadline. Metropolis dog catcher Nathan Lott reports he's collected one loose pit bull from Brookport since the closure.
