Fredonia, KY – Both staff and inmates at the Western Kentucky Correctional Complex in Fredonia are praising the facility's recent population shift from an all-male to an all-female one. Deputy warden Steve Woodward tells the Eddyville Herald-Ledger his staff has been surprised at how seamless the transition has gone. Female inmates now run the institution's 12-acre farm: doing everything from feeding cows, spraying the orchard, baling hay, and picking vegetables. Woodward says the female population is more obedient, the dormitories are cleaner and theft in the kitchen is now on the decline. The facility has housed male prisoners for 32 years and the population swap was prompted by the closure of the Otter Creek facility after allegations of prison guard sexual misconduct.
