Fort Campbell, KY – A Fort Campbell veteran is safe after a public suicide attempt Saturday. 23-year-old Iraq veteran Todd Michael Rashaen Smith stopped his car on Fort Campbell Boulevard just outside of Gate 4. He drenched himself and the car in gasoline, but a passerby grabbed him and pulled him away before he could light himself on fire. The Kentucky New Era reports Smith told Oak Grove Police he decided to commit suicide after attending a memorial service for a friend who died in Iraq three years ago. However, police say Smith's act may have been a cry for help. Officers were unable to locate any kind of igniter at the scene.
