Frankfort, KY – A ban on texting while driving takes effect in Kentucky this week. Starting Thursday, drivers will be stopped if they are spotted e-mailing or sending text messages while on the road.
The fine for violations will be $25 for a first offense and $50 for subsequent offenses. But Kentucky State Police Lieutenant David Jude says no one will be charged until next year.
"Through January 1st of 2011, law enforcement across the state will only be issuing warnings, really kind of serving s an educational piece to that law, basically letting motorists what they're doing wrong and why it's important not to be texting."
The law will also make it illegal for drivers under 18 to use cell phones in any capacity while driving, except for emergencies.
