Paducah, KY – A Paducah agency that helps people pay utility bills has exhausted its grant in just three days. West Kentucky Allied Services director Tony Dowdy says there was less money and more need this year than last.
Low income residents of eight counties received just over one hundred and thirty one thousand dollars between July 12 and July 14 when funds ran out. The grant under the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program helped 956 families.
Dan McKenzie of Community Action of Kentucky, with which the western Kentucky agency is affiliated, says the federal government gave $4 million to Kentucky to offset high utility bills caused by hot weather in June. McKenzie says most of the funds have been handed out with no more coming in.
