Hopkinsville, KY – A Hopkinsville police officer is hospitalized after wrecking his patrol car on East Ninth Street overnight. While responding to a call, Officer David Hyde swerved to avoid two cars beside a construction site where workers were repaving the street. Hyde hit a dump truck and a wooden pole before rolling to a halt. He was taken by ambulance to the Jennie Stuart Medical Center and is in stable condition.
Witness Harvey Jett tells the Kentucky New Era Hyde must have forgotten the workers' presence in his haste, because the officer had driven past several times that evening. Jett says Hyde's siren was not activated and estimates his speed to be in excess of 70 miles per hour.
