Job cuts at the Department of Education

By Rebecca Feldhaus

Frankfort, KY – The Kentucky Department of Education now lacks four top level administrative positions after a department-wide reorganization. Spokesperson Lisa Gross says the proposal went through last week, and they are now waiting on an executive order from Governor Steve Beshear's office before it's formalized. Gross says the reorganization helps to cut spending as well as accomplish other goals.

"The other part of this is that this reorganization is going to help us better direct our energies toward the things we need to focus on legislative mandates, our race to the top application and the plan that's within that and also the strategic plan of our Kentucky Board of Education."

Gross says the goal of the reorganization is to lose as few people as possible. The Department currently employs about 400 people, a much lower number than they've had in years past.
