Louisville, KY – U.S. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell and Democratic house speaker Nancy Pelosi delivered remarks today at the formal opening of the National Conference of State Legislatures in Louisville. As Kentucky Public Radio's Rick Howlett reports, the two offered their views on the recently passed health care overhaul package.
Pelosi, the Democratic speaker of the house, thanked state lawmakers who pushed for passage of the sweeping legislation.
"Now that health care reform is the law of the land, we must work together on implementation."
McConnell says the law is going to cost too much and gives the federal government too much power.
"It's our view that bureaucrats in Washington have no right to force anybody to buy health insurance."
The two also gave partisan views on the effectiveness of the federal stimulus package. Pelosi says it has created or saved millions of jobs; McConnell contends it's done little to stimulate economic growth.
