Richmond, KY – Kentucky is among 38 states expected to benefit from over a billion dollars in federal loan and grant money to further broadband wiring in rural areas. US Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says Internet service is considered critical in enhancing economic development today. Kentucky will receive just over $130 million. Vilsack says these monies are not the final solution when it comes to wiring the country.
"I think it's fair to say that it's a down payment and not a balloon payment approach. It clearly makes a difference but there is still far more work to be done to make broadband available in all corners of the country in all parts of the country."
Almost $124 million will go to the West Kentucky Rural Telephone cooperative to serve Kentucky and Tennessee citizens. The USDA estimates the project will create 160 jobs up-front. It's expected to benefit 41,000 residents and 3,500 businesses.
