Lewisburg, KY – A Mennonite girl died Thursday morning after being struck by lightning during a storm in Lewisburg in Logan County, near the Todd County line. Logan County Coroner Mary Givens ruled that Mary Ella Horning Leid, 16, died at the scene at 10:45 a.m. She told the Kentucky New Era that the girl had gone to the garden to dig potatoes for lunch and was attempting to get back home when the storm hit. She also noted that the girl was carrying a basket of potatoes and a pitchfork. Latham Funeral Home in Elkton is in charge of arrangements, which were incomplete this morning. The victim is the daughter of Willis and Mary Ann Leid. Givens also noted that the severe electrical storm also struck at a neighboring farm, resulting in the lightning death of five heads of cattle.
