County and City rectify pauper burial overcharge

By Rebecca Feldhaus

Paducah, KY – McCracken County and the city of Paducah have rectified over-billing to the city for pauper burials. Paducah Commissioner Gerald Watkins says traditionally, the county pays half and the city pays half for pauper burials, so the bills were noticeably higher. When a citizen of McCracken County dies and has neither family nor money for their burial, it's the responsibility of the county and city. Though the burials cost 500-dollars, an oversight in the McCracken County Treasurer's office billed the city $1000-dollars per burial. An average of $25-hundred dollars of McCracken County and Paducah taxes goes toward these burials every month.
