Frankfort, KY – Last week, a legislative oversight committee refused to renew a $200,000 contract the state has with the Center for Climate Strategies. The center is assisting a state panel looking for ways the commonwealth can cope with climate change. Apparently some lawmakers fear the center's efforts will hurt the state's coal industry, but Governor Beshear disagrees.
"It's a very responsible, even-handed group that has worked in about 40 states, all over the country."
Including Pennsylvania, which is a coal state. Beshear says he will talk to Energy and Environment Secretary Len Peters before deciding how to proceed. The oversight panel's vote against the contract is not binding on the administration.
