Golden Pond, KY – The U.S. Forest Service is holding off on banning campfires in the Land Between the Lakes after recent rainfall, but campers are being urged to use extra caution with campfires. Forest Service spokeswoman Kathryn Harper says if fire risks return before more rainfall, campfire restrictions could be imposed on the recreation area.
Spotty rains only temporarily relieved drought conditions, softening wildlife risks but leaving area burning bans in place. Nine western Kentucky counties have enacted bans on burning in an effort to head off wildfires in grassy and brushy areas. McCracken, Marshall, Ballard, Livingston, Carlisle, Fulton, Hickman, Lyon and Crittenden counties have ordered bans.
