Illinois Launches Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan

By Jacque Day

Illinois – Enrollment opened today for the federal Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan for thousands of Illinois residents previously denied health coverage. The Affordable Care Act prohibits insurers from basing coverage or pricing decisions on a person's health status beginning January 2014. The Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan provides transitional coverage until 2014. Illinois' share of the $5 billion fund is an estimated $196 million. Coverage through the plan will begin September 1.
