Frankfort, KY – Kentucky families enrolled in the state's Children Health Insurance Program that offers free or low-cost health insurance to eligible children will no longer have to pay monthly premiums for the coverage. Some families involved in the program had been required to pay a $20 monthly premium to receive the coverage for their children.
Gov. Steve Beshear says by eliminating the monthly premiums, children won't have to leave the program due to cost. He said it's an example of making sure children have access to health care in tough economic times.
Suspending the premiums affects about 12,200 families and more than 16,000 children.
