Frankfort, KY – With Kentucky's second loss for Race to the Top dollars, the head of the Kentucky Education Association is predicting a decline in calls for charter schools in the state. Sharon Oxendine says charter schools still haven't proven to be all that effective.
"In fact, there's been studies that have been shown all across the nation that charter school students aren't doing any better than the public school counterparts, and in most cases, they're not doing as well."
The lack of charter schools in Kentucky's application for Race to the Top dollars is being blamed for the state's inability to land federal school improvement funds. Charter schools are publicly funded, but are freed from some state regulations in exchange for greater accountability.
