Rural Physicians Program Partnership Between MSU and UK

By Rebecca Feldhaus

Murray, KY – Representatives for the University of Kentucky College of Medicine announced Wednesday they are close to completing a formal agreement with Murray State University for a Rural Physician Leadership Program. Interim Dean of the UK College of Medicine, Dr. Emery Wilson says there are numerous reasons why the area needs this type of program.

"We need more physicians in Kentucky, and we need them in rural areas, so this gives us an opportunity to do that. It also gives us an opportunity to perhaps help smaller communities in this area from an economic development standpoint."

The program will admit 10 students per year. Students will complete two years at the University of Kentucky's Lexington campus, then use the facilities at Murray Calloway County Hospital for their final two years. The inaugural class will begin training in the Purchase Area in 2014.
