Frankfort, KY – Head of Kentucky's House had some good words this week for Senate President David Williams. The Republican this week announced he's running for Governor. House speaker Greg Stumbo, who's a Democrat, says Williams knows the key issues facing the Commonwealth.
"David Williams is qualified to be governor of this state nobody can argue that. You may or may not agree with some of his policies and some of his positions, that's a different issue but on just the issue of is David Williams qualified. Is he familiar with state government does he know the issues that are confronting Kentucky? Right now the answer to all those things is yes," said Stumbo.
Stumbo is sometimes mentioned as a gubernatorial candidates, but, the House Speaker says he's only interested in his re-election and in the election of fellow Democrats.
"I have about 42 members in Democratic seats that are up for election, so we're focused on getting them elected and if that comes true, and if I'm fortunate enough to be elected Speaker by this House this body again, then you never know what might happen. But I don't have any plans beyond that right now," added Stumbo.
The man known as Mr. Republican' is among Williams' supporters. US Senator Mitch McConnell this week told business leaders in Lexington he's a big fan.
"I think you all know I'm a big fan of David Williams. I think he's really been the most consequential republican in Frankfort in Kentucky history because of the tenure majority that the republicans have enjoyed in the state senate," said McConnell.
Also running in the Republican primary for governor is Louisville businessman Phil Moffett. The only Democrat in the race so far is Governor Steve Beshear, who's seeking a second term.
