Murray, KY – It wasn't that long ago too much water was a major problem for many communities across Kentucky. But the rain faucet has been turned off. Some 24 counties in parts of western Kentucky now face drought conditions. University of Kentucky Agricultural meteorologist Tom Priddy says high temperatures and heat proceeded the dry period.
"We had over two months ago, extreme heat, right at the time corn was going through its reproductive stage and that really really set the stage for yield reductions as we moved into this dry period."
Priddy says 60 percent of corn production in western Kentucky has been lost. The central portion of the state is now listed as abnormally dry could also reach drought stage.
