West Tennessee – West Tennessee's Cherokee Wolf Clan, with members in Henry and Weakley counties, is one of six groups stripped of state tribal recognition. The decision came late last week, just months after the state granted the groups recognition for the first time. The court order settles a lawsuit brought against the Tennessee Commission on Indian Affairs, which disbanded July 1. The Knoxville News Sentinel reports the plaintiff, a representative of the Cherokee Nation, contended that the Commission violated the state's open meetings law. Commission members met in June and voted unanimously to recognize the tribes. The order, filed Friday, declares recognition of the groups "void and of no effect."
