Frankfort, KY – Some children may have to get a second flu vaccination this year because of last year's H1N1 pandemic. State Epidemiologist Kraig Humbaugh says the guideline applies to children between 6 months and eight years old who didn't receive an H1N1 vaccine last year and at least one seasonal flu vaccine prior to last year.
"Gets a little bit complicated, but basically it means that children who have been either unimmunized or underimmunized in the past should receive the two doses. That's one dose hopefully early in the season and then another booster dose a month later."
Humbaugh says for older children and adults, the H1N1 and season flu immunizations have been rolled into one. He adds flu clinics at schools have been reduced this year because last year's federal funding isn't available. Vaccinations are offered at pharmacies, local health departments, and hospitals. Health officials recommend everyone six months and older get a flu vaccine.
