Mayfield, KY – An Islam advocacy group plans to work toward cultural education following a meeting with Somali Muslims yesterday. Islamaca International and the American Civil Liberties Union met in Mayfield with two members of the Somali community. They planned to discuss possible legal action against the city. The zoning board in August denied a conditional use permit for a mosque because of the unavailability of parking. Islamaca spokesperson Bethany Beyyette says her group does not plan to file a lawsuit on behalf of the Somalis. She could not comment on whether or not the ACLU does. Beyyette says Nashville-based Islamaca plans to work with local and regional volunteers to facilitate understanding between Mayfield residents and the Somalis.
